The Sol and Esther Draznin Endowed Scholarship is given each year for outstanding work in the study of ancient Greek, with some preference for Cowell College students (as the donor is a Cowell alum). Because the award is intended to encourage students to pursue the major, strong preference is given to underclassmen. The Draznin Award for 2016-17, in the amount of $500, was awarded to freshman Leighton Smith, a Cowell College student in his first year of Greek. Unfailingly cheerful and able to work productively with anyone in the class, Leighton consistently asked insightful questions, and brought his interests in Literature to bear on his study of Greek. He has been a fixture at events and lectures sponsored by Classical Studies, and we look forward to having him in the program for the remainder of his time at UCSC. Leighton’s hard work and positive attitude are a real asset to Slug Classics in precisely the way that the Draznin Scholarship was established to honor.
